A Word from Father Mullin

Now hear this! Now hear this!

Thus says the Lord: “You shall not molest nor oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 22/20)

These words from today’s first reading take on an especially timely meaning as our nation and other developed nations around the world continue to wrestle with staggering numbers of immigrants and refugees - “present day aliens” - seeking a safe dwelling place in our midst. Are we ready to welcome and care for them?

Jesus’ reaffirmation of the second great commandment - Love your neighbor as yourself - challenges our attitudes, behaviors and political actions in relation to our newest neighbors. Let all who have ears, hear the Word of the Lord!

Father Tom Mullin
